Here are some various examples of metaphors, just to get your mind thinking metaphorically. Some of these you will be familiar with. Others are more uncommon, including several dreamt up just for this page.
The common life metaphors include a "journey," which suggests forward movement and a final destination or many destinations: "Life is a journey with many challenges, and the destination is a place of enlightenment." Other common life metaphors include "story" (the story of his life), "dream" (life is but a dream), and "game" (hence there are "winners" and "losers").
Then there are the more uncommon examples of life metaphors. If life was a casino, you might see life in general as the "house" and yourself as the "player." To "win" you have to either know how to play the odds well, or become one of the owners of the casino. Other unusual life metaphors: a roller coaster ride, a vacation, an extraterrestrial visit, or a business.
Money
A lubricant, way of keeping score, piece of the pie, promises, or applause.
Jobs
Slavery, business, passion, avocation, associate, project, stepping stone, or necessary evil.
God
A spirit, father, force, nothingness, virus, love, or mother.
One's Body
A temple, home, vehicle, piece of meat, prison, mystery, machine, or asset.
A spaceship, garden, home, bus station, or living thing.
Humans
Parasites, animals, angels, walking books, computer programs, children, spirits, embodied ideas, characters in a story, dust in the wind, voices in the darkness, divine sparks, seeds, gods, sinners, creators, destroyers, ants, or birds.
